Four Panthers Tabbed Preseason All-Conference, Panthers Picked ThirdJan. 27, 2010
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The University of Northern Iowa softball team was picked to finish third in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll, the league announced Wednesday. Rachel Gerking, Megan Machovec, Mackenzie Daigh and Jen Larsen were each named to the preseason all-conference team. The preseason poll and team are voted on by the league's coaches. Gerking set a new MVC record with 59 runs batted in during the 2009 season and hit .366 with 11 home runs, 14 doubles and 29 runs scored for the powerful UNI lineup. Machovec (.354, 42 runs, 11 SB) was a first-team all-MVC performer last season, while Larsen was a dual-threat (.312, 9 HR, 40 runs, 38 RBI/18 wins, 23 CG).Daigh was named the 2009 MVC Newcomer of the Year after hitting .316 and scoring 28 runs for the Panthers last season. The Panthers finished third in the MVC standings a year ago, and their 15 conference wins were the most in school history.
