Hailing from Spencer, Iowa, Carissa Skarin has led a successful coaching career with the Black Hawk Area Swim Team. She has moved to the next level as the new University of Northern Iowa women's swimming assistant coach.

Since the age of four, Skarin has been involved in swimming and has more than 10 years of swim lesson experience. She was co-captain her senior year at Spencer High School, specializing in distance free.

Skarin is also coach of BLAST, a Cedar Falls/Waterloo swim club in which she has been able to set the club record for sending the most athletes to the state competition and has helped athletes break more than 10 club records. Also, many of her swimmers have qualified for the Central Zones All-Star meet in Lawrence, Kan.

Before coaching BLAST, Rabel was an assistant coach for the State Champion Cedar Falls High School Women's Swim Team of 2003. On this same team were two swimmers who are now part of the UNI women's swim team (Abby Girard and Maggie Rickert).
