The UNI Women’s Swim team traveled to Carbondale, Ill. to compete at the State Farm MVC Swimming and Diving championships. The championship started Thursday and will end Saturday afternoon. Thursday’s events included the 200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 400 medley relay.

 

Top-performer for the Panthers for the first day of the MVC Championships was Chelsea Hartman. She was runner-up in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:58.24; this is a new school record for UNI.

 

Stephanie Yattoni, Kelly McCullough, April Mangrich, Anna Jovanovic, Kelly Mateas, Ashley Hunter and Melissa Little all competed in the 500 freestyle finals. All the girls finished with personal best times for the season.


 

 

 

Josie Itzen took fifth place in the 200 IM. She finished with a time of 2:09.80, breaking her season-best time of 2:13.34.

 

Abby Girard finished 14th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.05. Teammates Abby Moes, Ashley Mangrich and Ally Green also competed in the 200 IM. Mangrich, with a time of 2:15.92, had a personal best. 

 

Meagan Miller took 14th in the 50 freestyle. She clocked in with a time of 25.18. Jean Matzen, Alexa Armstrong and Katie Maloy also competed in the 50 freestyle. Their times were 25.41, 25.52, and 26.07, respectively.

 

The 200 freestyle relay team of Ashley Hunter, Maegan Miller, Josie Itzen and Maggie Rickert finished fourth. They clocked in with a time of 1:37.74.

 

The quartet of Abby Girard, Ashley Mangrich, Maggie Rickert and Josie Itzen swam in the 400 medley relay. They placed fourth with a time of 3:58.93.

 

Coach Stacey Simmer was very proud of the way her team competed in day one of the tournament. “We started off awesome! Just in the first day, we had 10 personal best.” stated Simmer, “We set goals and have achieved them. It is only day one; we still have two more days left.”

 

The Panthers will continue action tomorrow morning with the preliminary races for the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. The races will begin at 11 a.m. with finals scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
