CARBONDALE, Ill.The University of Northern Iowa women’s swimming team took down two UNI school records in the second day of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships today in Carbondale, Ill. Freshman Chelsea Hartman had a hand in both of the records, setting the new record in the 200-yard freestyle and also serving as the anchor leg in the 800-yard freestyle.

 

Hartman started her evening by taking the UNI record in the 200-yard freestyle clocking in at 1:54.56. In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the quartet of Josie Itzen, Ashley Hunter, Abby Girard and Hartman took down the school record recording a time of 7:47.50.

 

“Overall there were a lot of good swims tonight,” head coach Stacey Simmer said. “We had a lot of personal bests to help lead us into tomorrow’s events, which is our best day.”


 

 

 

In the 200-yard medley, the group of Girard, Ashley Mangrich, Maggie Rickert and Maegan Miller took fourth place with a time of 1:49.01.  

 

Itzen took fifth place in the 400-yard IM clocking it at 4:35.35, shaving five seconds off her previous season-best of 4:40.07. April Mangrich finished 15th in the 400-yard IM, clocking it at 4:44.35.

 

Rickert took 12th place in the 100-yard butterfly finishing in 59.69, also a season-best time. In the 100-yard breaststroke Mangrich took 10th place with a season-best time of 1:07.66.

 

Girard took sixth place in the 100-yard backstroke clocking in yet another season-best time of 59.17. Abby Moes also recorded her top time this season in the 100-yard backstroke recording a time of 59.53.

 

The MVC Championships conclude tomorrow with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m.
