CARBONDALE, Ill. - The University of Northern Iowa women's 400-yard freestyle relay team set a school-record in the final day of competition at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday.  The Panthers finished the meet in fourth place with 346 points.

 

The relay team, consisting of sophomore Abby Girard (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls), junior Maegan Miller (Olathe, Kan./Olathe), sophomore Maggie Rickert (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) and freshman Josie Itzen (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls), took fourth-place honors in a school-record time of 3:34.50.  The previous record of 3:34.51 was set at last season's Championships.

 

The Panthers' best individual performance of the day came in the 200-yard backstroke.  Girard finished fifth in the event, with a time of 2:07.83.  Sophomore Abby Moes (Sioux City, Iowa/East) was close behind in seventh, clocking in at 2:08.63.


 

 

 

Itzen came in ninth in the 100 freestyle (54.26) after swimming a personal-best time of 54.12 in the preliminaries.  Rickert claimed 10th in the event, clocking in at 54.38.

 

Freshman Caitlin Krengel (West Chicago, Ill./West Chicago) swam a personal-best time of 2:31.53 in the 200 breaststroke, earning a ninth-place finish.

 

UNI's swimmers turned in numerous personal-best times, broke one school record and earned 11 top-ten finishes in three days of competition.
