 THIS WEEK IN PANTHER SWIMMING

Oct. 10  Triangular - Normal, Ill.

• UNI opens the 2008-09 season with a triangular meet Friday against the St. Louis Billikens and Missouri Valley Conference foe Illinois State. The meet will begin at 5 p.m. at the Horton Pool in Normal, Ill.

• UNI will look to improve on its success from last year’s season in which it broke four school records and finished fourth in the team standings at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships.

Off the blocks

• This year’s team will be led by seven senior veterans and team captains Abby Moes and Meagan Miller. Juniors Abby Girard, Josie Itzen and Maggie Rickert will also play big roles for the Panther squad.

Abby Girard and Josie Itzen will once again battle it out in the 200 IM this season. Girard holds the school record with a time of 2:09.67, while Itzen follows in second clocking in at 2.10.31.

• Girard’s outstanding sophomore campaign also led her to break the school record in the 100 free (53.1) and the 100 back (58.46). She was named MVC swimmer of the week on Jan. 16th during the 2007-08 season.

• Itzen will be a strong force in the 200 and 400 IM leading the team with a  season-best 4:35.49 in the 400 IM.

• Freshman Chelsea Hartman has shown great promise in the distance free races, posting times comparable to top-five finishes in the MVC during practice.

• Senior Ashley Hunter returns for her final season after sitting out last year due to a shoulder injury. She will be a great contender in the 200 free.

• Junior Maggie Rickert looks to contend in the 50 free and 100 fly. Rickert holds the school record in the 50 free with a time of 59.38 and led the team with a season-best 24.9 in the 50 free.

Abby Moes also returns for her final season with hopes to improve upon last year’s success in the 100 and 200 back. Moes is ranked second on the all-time list with 2:07.65 in the 200 back.
