Iowa City, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team recovered from yesterdays slow start at the Hawkeye Invitational Tournament in Iowa City, Iowa. The Panthers were able to claim seven singles wins; four against Iowa State, and three against Northern Illinois.

UNI played very well against the Cyclones, winning four of the seven singles matches. Sophomore Taynara Moraes (Santos, Brazil/Luiza Macuca) topped Iowa State's Eve Soriano 6-2, 6-2. Junior Carolina Hannes (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Jardim Sao Paulo) defeated Danielle Uscinski 6-1, 6-3 and senior Mariana Muraca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/ Elvira Brandas) won over Chrissy DeRouin 2-6, 6-2, 10-3. Senior Meredith Esbeck (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) was also able to top Iowa State's Dora Losonczy 6-1, 6-2.

Because of weather concerns, all matches were completed today, therefore UNI also played Northern Illinois in singles match-ups. The Panthers were able to get three singles victories over the Huskies. Senior Agnese Pukse (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary School #64) was able to defeat Jenny Edner 6-1, 6-2, while Moraes also claimed a victory over Dora Delgadillo 6-3, 6-3. Hannes also found victory over the Huskies topping Brooke Forsberg 6-1, 6-3.

The Panthers also took on Iowa today in doubles competition, however the Hawkeyes proved to be too strong for the Panthers, as UNI lost all three doubles matches. Junior Meghana Paritala (Secunderabad, India/Andrah Pradesh) and Pukse fell to Iowa's Hillary Mintz 8-3, while the duo of Hannes and Sampada Kanade (Mumbai, India/Modern English) fell to Jacqueline Lee and Kayla Berry 8-2. Moraes and Muraca were defeated by Iowa's Milica Veselinovic and Merel Beelen 8-4.

With the completion of the tournament today, the Panthers have a two week break before their next match. The Panthers will be in action on Feb. 4th against Wisconsin-Green Bay at 11:00 a.m. at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
