Final Stats

Waterloo, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team had its first test of the 2007 season today against Eastern Illinois. The Panthers won all three doubles matches and three singles matches to get the 4-3 win over Eastern Illinois.

           

            In the No. 1 doubles match the duo of Meghana Paritala (Secunderabad, India/ Andhra Pradesh) and Agnese Pukse (Riga, Latvia/ Riga Secondary School #64) topped the #56 ranked doubles team of Natalie Martin and Hayley Homburg 8-1. Sampada Kanade (Mumbai, India/ Modern English) and Carolina Hannes (Sao Paulo, Brazil/ Colegio Jardim Sao Paulo) won over EIU's Sandra Sasidharan and Madina Mambetova 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles match. In the No. 3 doubles match Mariana Muraca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/ Elvira Brandao) and Taynara Moraes (Santos, Brazil/ Luiza Macuco) topped Stephanie Harmazy and Sam Liniger 8-1.


 

 

 

            In singles play, Kanade won over EIU's Madina Mambetova in the No. 3 position 6-4, 6-2. In the No. 4 position Moraes won over Harmazy 6-4, 7-5. Meredith Esbeck (Des Moines, Iowa/ Roosevelt) won in the No. 6 position 6-1, 6-0 over EIU's Annie Munch.

 

            "Today was a really hard fought match," UNI head coach Sachin Kirtane said. "It was really great for Meghana and Agnese to get that win over the #56 ranked doubles team. Hopefully we can keep playing well, and work hard this week in practice to prepare for Nebraska next weekend."

 

            The Panthers are now 6-0 in the 2007 season and will be in action on March 3rd when they travel to Lincoln, Neb. to take on Nebraska at 10:30 a.m.
