Final Stats

San Jose – The UNI Panthers (7-5) dropped their second straight match Tuesday, falling to the San Jose State Spartans, 4-3. The Spartans (6-4) won four straight singles matches to claim the victory.

UNI got off to a promising start, earning the doubles point. Junior Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and Talia Jang-Stewart topped San Jose State’s Kerri Kummer and Sandra Florea, 9-8, in No. 1 doubles. Securing the point, senior Sampada Kanade and sophomore Jessica Kunzelmann defeated Chau Truong and Anna Guzman 8-3, in No. 2 doubles.

UNI started off hot as Phoebe Walker won by retirement over Olivia Marshall in No. 1 singles.  Laia Gonzalez-Garrido continued her strong play as she barely edged Kerri Kummer 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in No. 2 singles.  From this point on, the Spartans won the next four single matches to give them the victory.  Sampada Kanade fell 6-2, 6-1 to Truong in the No. 3 spot and Jessica Kunzelmann was barely edged by Anna Guzman 7-5, 7-5 in the No. 4 spot.  San Jose State’s Jennifer Williams beat out Talia Jang-Stewart 6-3, 6-0 and Sandra Florea secured the win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Stefannia Sampaio.

The Panthers take on San Francisco University today at 11:00 am.
