Final Stats

Waterloo, Iowa- The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team won 6-1 over Evansville today in their final home match of the season.

 

            The Panthers (15-4, 4-1 MVC) won two of the three doubles matches to win the doubles point over the Purple Aces. Meghana Paritala (Secunderabad, India) and Agnese Pukse (Riga, Latvia) teamed up to top Brittany Brown and Beth Peyton 8-4 in the No. 1 doubles match. The tandem of Mariana Muraca (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Taynara Moraes (Santos, Brazil) won 8-2 over Stephanie Millis and Jamie Petty in the No. 3 match to help secure the doubles point for the Panthers.

 


 

 

            Evansville (16-6, 1-4) fought back to win the No. 1 singles match, but the Panthers were too strong for the Purple Aces and claimed five singles victories. Pukse won 6-1, 7-6, (8-6) over Peyton in the No. 2 singles match, while Sampada Kanade (Mumbai, India) won 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles match over Lisa Kawamoto. Moraes topped Allie Cox 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 spot, and Carolina Hannes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) won over Sara Wilhoite 6-4, 6-1. Rounding out the singles victories for the Panthers was Meredith Esbeck (Des Moines, Iowa) winning easily over Stephanie Millis 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 match.

 

            "We established some momentum winning the doubles point, and then were able to play well all the way down the singles line-up," UNI head coach Sachin Kirtane said. "We need to continue playing like this and prepare for our road trip."

 

            The Panthers will be in action again next weekend as they begin a three game road trip. UNI will face currently ranked No. 64 Indiana State Friday, April 20. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. in Terre Haute, Ind.
