Final Stats
WATERLOO, IOWA – The Wichita State Shockers (17-5, 7-0) swept the UNI Panthers (13-8, 2-5) in conference play Saturday, 7-0. The win secured the MVC regular season title for the Shockers, who have outscored conference competition by a score of 47-2 thus far.
The Panthers provided a pair of close matches for Wichita State, but the Shockers pulled out wins in each to earn the doubles point. Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and Phoebe Walker (No. 2) held only a 5-4 deficit at one point in their match, but WSU’s Stephanie Dalmacio and Florentine Hanisch generated a 3-1 run to win, 8-5. The Panthers’ Taynara Moraes and Jessica Kunzelmann (No. 3) were back and forth with Laryssa Ferreira and Lenore Lazaroiu, but the Shocker pair forced a tiebreaker where they earned an 8-7 (7-4) victory. Anna Egorova and Lutfiana Budiharto defeated Sampada Kanade and Diana Mendez at the No. 1 spot, 8-1, to sweep doubles competition.
Walker experienced her first loss at the No. 1 spot this season, falling to Egorova, 6-2, 6-3. Budiharto (No. 2) of Wichita State handled Gonzalez-Garrido, 6-0, 6-2. The Shockers’ Torrie Browning topped Kanade, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 3 position. Kunzelmann (No. 4) won her first set, 7-6, but fell in the next two to Dalmacio, 7-5, (10-5). With the match decided, the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches were limited to single sets. UNI’s Moraes (No. 5) fell to Lazaroui, 8-4, while WSU’s Hanisch (No. 6) defeated Mendez, 8-4.
The Panthers conclude the regular season tomorrow at the Black Hawk Tennis Club as they take on the Creighton Bluejays. Match time is set for 10 a.m.
