Final Stats

WATERLOO, IOWA – UNI women’s tennis ended their regular season on a high note Sunday, defeating conference foe Creighton, 7-0. The victory puts the Panthers at 14-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play for the season.

The Panthers won two out of three doubles matches to earn their initial point. Sampada Kanade and Diana Mendez topped Creighton’s Tess Reddin and Nicole Nakaoka in No. 1 doubles, 8-3. UNI’s Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and Phoebe Walker won their match at the No. 2 spot, defeating Leesa and Sarah Cadwallader, 8-1. Lauren Mastro and Kelsey Schmidt of Creighton earned their team’s only victory as they edged Taynara Moraes and Jessica Kunzelmann, 8-6.

UNI performed a clean sweep in singles competition, not dropping a single set in all six matches. Walker, competing at the No. 1 spot, defeated Reddin, 6-4, 6-4. Gonzalez-Garrido topped Mastro, 6-1, 6-2. Kanade handled Nakaoka, 6-1, 6-1. Kunzelmann improved her team-best singles record to 21-10 for the fall and spring seasons as she defeated Schmidt, 6-2, 6-1. Moraes won her final regular season match of her career, topping Mary Pat McMullan, 6-0, 6-2. The senior is currently sixth all-time in singles victories for the Panthers with 70. Mendez secured the Panther sweep with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Lindsey Erickson.

The Panthers now turn their attention to the MVC Team Championships that will be held in Omaha next weekend.
