Omaha, Neb. - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team's hope for a Missouri Valley Conference title was stopped short today by Southern Illinois; the No. 6 seeded Salukis upset the No. 2 seeded Panthers, 4-0 in the first round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships today.

            The Panthers struggled early, losing two of the three doubles matches. The duo of Mariana Muraca (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Taynara Moraes (Santos, Brazil) were the lone doubles winners for the Panthers topping Michela Cruise and Martina Ce 8-3.

            In singles matches, Amy Blacketer topped Agnese Pukse (Riga, Latvia) 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles match, while Jessica Flannery won 7-6, 6-4 over Carolina Hannes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the No. 4 singles match. Ce won 6-1, 6-2 over Meredith Esbeck (Des Moines, Iowa) to seal the win for the Salukis.

            The Panthers finish the season 17-6 overall and 6-2 in MVC play.
