Minneapolis – The Panthers continued their strong showing at the Gopher Invitational on the second day of the tournament. Sophomore Diana Mendez and freshman Jessica Kunzelmann will compete in the championship matches of their respective flights as competition winds down tomorrow.
Diana Mendez advanced to the Lynx Singles Flight championship after her opponent, Air Force’s Samantha Sarkis, forfeited their semifinal match. Mendez will face Marianne Cicmanec of Nebraska tomorrow.
Jessica Kunzelmann topped Sarah Cassman of Air Force 6-4, 6-4 in her semifinal match to qualify for the Twins Singles Flight championship. The freshman will meet Ashley Finnegan of Nebraska tomorrow.
Talia Jang-Stewart remains tied for first place in the round robin Wild Singles Flight. She defeated Katie Elifson of South Dakota State 6-3, 6-3 to improve her tournament and overall individual record to 3-0. Jang-Stewart’s Sunday match(es) remain to be determined.
Both of UNI’s doubles teams are set to face each other tomorrow in the consolation championship of the Golden Doubles Flight. Diana Mendez and Talia Jang-Stewart defeated the Iowa State duo of Loprinzi/Tarkoe 8-3 and Dobson/Reimer of Gustavus 8-3. Meanwhile, Jessica Kunzelmann and Taynara Moraes ousted Brannen/McDougall of South Dakota State 8-3 then received a bye to reach the consolation final.
Taynara Moraes nearly earned a spot in the Lynx Singles Flight championship match where she would have faced Diana Mendez. Marianne Cicmanec of Nebraska edged Moraes out, defeating her 6-4, 3-6, (10-5). Moraes is scheduled to face Samantha Sarkis of Air Force in the third-place match tomorrow.
Sampada Kanade lost to Kelcie Klockenga of Iowa 6-1, 6-2 in her consolation bracket match. Tomorrow, Kanade faces Katrina Eromin of Air Force.
Iowa State’s Maria Femanda Macedo slipped by freshman Phoebe Walker 7-5, 1-6, (10-3). Walker is set to face Iowa’s Allison Majercik tomorrow for her final match of the tournament.
Laia Gonzalez-Garrido did not compete as she continues to nurse an injured hip flexor.
