Final Stats
Panther Women’s Tennis ended its third and final day at the Gopher Invitational on Sunday. UNI boasted three second-place finishes as well as one third-place finish in three of the tournament’s various flights.
Diana Mendez fell to Nebraska’s Marianne Cicmanec in the championship match of the Lynx Singles Flight 6-3, 6-3. Mendez, a sophomore, defeated opponents from Gustavus, Minnesota, and Air Force before losing her championship match on Sunday.
Freshman Jessica Kunzelmann was edged by Nebraska’s Ashley Finnegan 6-4, 5-7, (10-4) in the championship match of the Twin Singles Flight. Kunzelmann had not lost a set before Sunday’s match.
Freshman Talia Jang-Stewart also ended the tournament as the runner-up in her respective flight, the Wild Singles Flight. Jang-Stewart was undefeated, going 4-0 in this round robin formatted flight. However, Kirby Bridges of Nebraska also went 4-0 and lost fewer games than Jang-Stewart, so she was awarded the title. Jang-Stewart defeated Marianne Barau of Gustavus in her final match on Sunday 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Tanyara Moraes defeated Mary Roop of Gustavus 8-4 in the third-place match of the Lynx Singles Flight. The senior fell short of facing Diana Mendez in the championship match of the flight after she was defeated by the flight’s eventual champion.
Sampada Kanade earned her first win of the tournament in her last match as she topped Katrina Eromin of Air Force 2-6, 6-4, (10-7). Kanade, a junior, competed in the Vikings Singles Flight.
Phoebe Walker defeated Allison Majercik 6-4, 6-2 in her final match of the tournament. The freshman competed in the Timberwolves Singles Flight.
The consolation championship of the Golden Doubles Flight between UNI’s Kunzelmann/Moraes and Mendez/Jang-Stewart was not played.
