Two Panthers qualified for the finals in their respective flights as day two of the Drake Invitational drew to a close. Laia Gonzalez-Garrido worked her way to the ‘B’ Singles Flight finals while Diana Mendez earned herself a spot in the ‘C’ Singles Flight championship match.

Laia Gonzalez-Garrido defeated Iowa State’s Tessa Lang 6-4, 6-0 in the ‘B’ Singles Flight quarterfinals. She then topped Kari Sloboth of Drake 7-5, 6-7 (8), 10-5. The sophomore faces Drake’s Jessica Aguilera in the championship match tomorrow.

Fellow sophomore Diana Mendez secured a spot in the ‘C’ Singles Flight finals after defeating Iowa State’s Bolan Tarkoe 6-7 (5), 7-5, 10-5 then Lindsey Short of Central Arkansas 6-1, 6-4. She will face Drake’s Sarah Plowman tomorrow.

Freshman Jessica Kunzelmann made it to the ‘A’ Singles Flight semifinals before falling in her last match of the day. Kunzelmann recovered from losing her first set and defeated Veronika Leszayova of Drake 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 in the quarterfinals. She then lost to Marie-Christine Chartier of Iowa State 6-3, 6-2 in the semis. 

After losing her first-round match on Friday, Phoebe Walker worked her way through the ‘A’ Singles consolation bracket to qualify for its final. The freshman ousted Lindsey Erickson 6-1, 6-0 then defeated Lauren Mastro, also of Creighton, 6-2, 6-3. Walker faces Magdalena Wiecha of Minnesota tomorrow.

Minnesota’s Karina Chiarelli eliminated Sampada Kanade 7-5, 7-6 (4) from the ‘A’ Singles Flight in their quarterfinal match.

Taynara Moraes also fell in her quarterfinal match. She was topped by Kari Sloboth of Drake 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 in the ‘B’ Singles Flight match.

In doubles play, Drake’s Aguilera/Rainey defeated Kunzelmann/Mendez 8-4.

The Drake Invitational concludes tomorrow after the tournament’s championship matches are played.
