Final Stats
The Drake Invitational drew to a close on Sunday, and sophomore Diana Mendez walked away with the ‘C’ Singles Flight championship. Two other Panthers competed in final matches as well.
Diana Mendez overcame a first game loss and defeated Drake’s Sarah Plowman 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 to claim the crown. Throughout the tournament, Mendez won four straight matches, topping opponents from Iowa State, Central Arkansas and Drake.
Freshman Phoebe Walker, competing in the ‘A’ Singles Flight, won the consolation bracket championship. Walker defeated Magdalena Wiecha of Minnesota 6-7 (8), 6-3, 10-6.
Laia Gonzalez-Garrido fell short in her ‘B’ Singles Flight championship match. Jessica Aguilera of Drake defeated the sophomore 6-1, 6-0.
The Panthers compete in their last tournament of the fall season October 10-12. They will be heading back to Des Moines for the MVC Individual Tournament.
