UNI’s hunt for an individual conference title ended on second day of the three-day Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships. The Panthers still have a few chances for success in the consolation brackets, however. Two singles players and two doubles pairs will compete for third place tomorrow in their respective flights.

The Panthers’ representative in the No. 1 singles flight, Sampada Kanade, was victorious in her match, defeating Lauren Mastro of Creighton in a nail-biter 6-7 (3), 6-1, 11-9. Kanade faces Kate Chybowski of Evansville tomorrow for fifth place.

Senior Taynara Moraes will compete for a fifth place finish in the No. 3 singles flight tomorrow after topping Nicole Nakaoka of Creighton 7-6 (3), 6-0.

Jessica Kunzelmann was defeated in her No. 4 singles semifinal match. Illinois State’s Tanja Hrovatic got the best of Kunzelmann, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The freshman will meet Creighton’s Kelsy Schmidt tomorrow for third place.

Laia Gonzalez-Garrido defeated Jessica Buterbaugh of Bradley 6-3, 6-0 in her consolation match. She plays Mary McMullan of Creighton tomorrow for a fifth place finish in the No. 5 singles bracket.

Diana Mendez lost her second match of the season, falling to Torrie Browning of Wichita State 7-5, 7-5 in her semifinal. Mendez faces Sarah Cadwallader of Creigton tomorrow for a third place finish.

In doubles play, Sampada Kanade and Taynara Moraes lost to Chybowski/Kotsiou of Evansville 8-4. The loss eliminated the pair from the No. 1 doubles flight.

Phoebe Walker and Laia Gonzalez-Garrido fell to Wichita State’s Budiharto/Egorova in the No. 2 doubles bracket 8-1. They will meet Sheoran/Flannery of Southern Illinois tomorrow to compete for third place.

Diana Mendez and Jessica Kunzelmann, competing in the No. 3 doubles flight, were topped by Hanisch/Lazaroiu of Wichita State 8-2. The pair will play tomorrow versus Wojakowska/Krubek of Bradley for third place in the bracket.

All finals and consolation finals matches will be held tomorrow at the MVC Individuals in Des Moines.
