Final Stats

On the last day of the final tournament of the Panthers’ fall season, UNI earned some respectable finishes. Diana Mendez and the doubles pair of Phoebe Walker and Laia Gonzalez-Garrido both earned third place finishes in their respective flights of the MVC Individual Championships.

Junior Sampada Kanade ended the tournament as the fifth-place finisher in the No. 1 singles flight. She defeated Kate Chybowski of Evansville 6-4, 7-6 (3).

In the No. 3 singles flight, senior Taynara Moraes fell just short of a fifth-place finish. She was topped by Veronika Wojakowaska of Bradley in her fifth-place consolation match 0-6, 7-6 (6), 10-8. 

Sophomore Laia Gonzalez-Garrido lost her consolation match for fifth place, falling to Creighton’s Mary McMullan 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 in the No. 5 singles flight.

Diana Mendez turned in the best individual performance of the tournament for the Panthers. Mendez, competing in the No. 6 singles bracket, ended with a third-place finish after defeating Sarah Cadwallader of Creighton 6-3, 6-2.

The Panthers earned another third place finish in the doubles division as Phoebe Walker and Laia Gonzalez-Garrido topped Sheoran/Flannery of Southern Illinois in a tight match 9-8 (2). The duo competed in the No. 2 doubles flight.

Freshman Jessica Kunzelmann withdrew from her third-place No. 4 singles match and No. 3 doubles match with Diana Mendez after suffering a knee injury.

The MVC Individual Championships marked the last tournament of the 2008 fall season for the Panthers.

Head Coach Sachin Kirtane was pleased with the team’s overall performance during the season considering its circumstances. “The competition was tougher this season. The is a lot more parity in teams. We will keep trying to get getter overall and get better from our injuries too as we prepare for the spring season.”
