 THIS WEEK IN PANTHER TENNIS

Sept. 26-28

The University of Northern Iowa women’s tennis team heads to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake University Invitational. This individual tournament will mark the Panthers’ second weekend competition of the 2008 fall season. Eight other schools will be competing against UNI at the tournament, including Nebraska, Minnesota and Iowa State as well as conference foes Drake and Creighton. Matches will take place at the Drake Tennis Center.

PROMISING PANTHER PERFORMANCES AT GOPHER INVITE

• Four Panthers ended their first tournament of the fall season with top three finishes in their respective flights at the Gopher Invitational.

• Sophomore Diana Mendez won her first three matches, defeating opponents from Gustavus, Minnesota and Air Force, before falling to Nebraska’s Marianne Cicmanec 6-3, 6-3 in the championship match of the Lynx Singles Flight.

Jessica Kunzelmann worked her way to the championship match of the Twin Singles Flight. The freshman then lost to Ashley Finnegan of Nebraska in a three-set match 6-4, 5-7, (10-4) to become runner-up of the flight.

• Another freshman, Talia Jang-Stewart, turned in an impressive performance at the Gopher Invitational. She went undefeated in her round-robin flight, tying with Kirby Bridges of Nebraska who also went 4-0. Jang-Stewart was awarded second place in the flight due to more game losses than Bridges.

• Tanyara Moraes defeated Mary Roop of Gustavus, 8-4, in the third-place match of the Lynx Singles Flight. The senior fell short of facing Diana Mendez in the championship match of the flight after she was defeated by the flight’s eventual champion.

• Two Panther doubles teams made it to the consolation championship of Golden Doubles Flight. Jessica Kunzelmann and Taynara Moraes were set to face Diana Mendez and Talia Jang-Stewart but chose not to play the consolation final match.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Des Moines will be the Panthers’ second home for the remainder of the fall season as both the Drake Invitational and MVC Individual Championships are set to take place at the state’s capital.
