The University of Northern Iowa women’s tennis team heads to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships. This tournament will mark the conclusion of the Panther’s 2008 fall season. Matches will be held on the campus of Drake University at the Drake Tennis Center.

RETURNING TO THE MVC INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

• Three Panthers return to the MVC Individual Tournament, hoping to build upon last year’s performances.

Diana Mendez, then a freshman, competed in the No. 6 singles bracket where she lost in the championship match to Illinois State’s Tanja Hrovatic. Mendez was also topped in the final match of the No. 3 doubles flight alongside her senior teammate Meghana Paritala.

• As a sophomore, Sampada Kanade was defeated in the semifinals of the No. 2 singles bracket by Katri Miller of Illinois State.

• Then a junior, Taynara Moraes fell in her No. 3 singles semifinal match to Joanne Schickerling of Indiana State.

• Kanade and Moraes teamed up in the No. 1 doubles bracket, qualifying for the final match before losing to an Indiana State duo.

SUCCESSES AT THE DRAKE INVITATIONAL

• The Panthers gained some experience at the same complex they will be playing at this weekend as they competed at the Drake Invitational the weekend of September 26-28.

Diana Mendez overcame a first game loss and defeated Drake’s Sarah Plowman to claim the crown for the ‘C’ Singles Flight. Throughout the tournament, Mendez won four straight matches, topping opponents from Iowa State, Central Arkansas and Drake.

• Freshman Phoebe Walker, competing in the ‘A’ Singles Flight, won the consolation bracket championship. Walker defeated Magdalena Wiecha of Minnesota.

ALMOST PERFECT

• Sophomore Diana Mendez has had the most impressive singles record for the Panthers this fall season. Mendez currently boasts a record of 7-1 and has competed in two finals matches in each of the two individual tournaments.

DOUBLES TROUBLE

• The Panthers have struggled in doubles play this fall season. The combined team record for doubles is currently 6-14.

PROMISING PERFORMANCES AT THE GOPHER INVITATIONAL

• Four Panthers ended their first tournament of the fall season with top-three finishes in their respective flights at the Gopher Invitational.

• Sophomore Diana Mendez won her first three matches, defeating opponents from Gustavus, Minnesota and Air Force, before falling to Nebraska’s Marianne Cicmanec in the championship match of the Lynx Singles Flight.

Jessica Kunzelmann worked her way to the championship match of the Twin Singles Flight. The freshman then lost to Ashley Finnegan of Nebraska.

• Another freshman, Talia Jang-Stewart, turned in an impressive performance at the Gopher Invitational. She went undefeated in her round-robin flight, tying with Kirby Bridges of Nebraska who also went 4-0. Jang-Stewart was awarded second place in the flight due to more game losses than Bridges.

• Tanyara Moraes defeated Mary Roop of Gustavus in the third-place match of the Lynx Singles Flight.
