Iowa, City, Iowa - The UNI women's track and field team got their 2005 indoor season off to the right start this Saturday (Jan. 15) at the Hawkeye Open in Iowa City, Iowa. With a strong recruiting class and an ever improving sophomore class, the Panthers are hoping to have a strong year.

UNI put up good numbers among their field athletes. Freshman Crystal Hanson (Roland, Iowa/Roland-Story) finished runner-up in the high jump for her 5-8 3/4 performance while newcomer Meredith Kosmacek (Neola, Iowa/Tri-Center) captured second place in the long jump (17-6 3/4). Freshmen Blair Runde (Plattville, Wis./Plattville) followed in fourth place (17-3 1/4), Stacy Butt (DeWitt, Iowa/Northeast Goose Lake) in fifth (17-2 1/4) and Liz Bradfield (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) in seventh (17-1 1/4). Mary Egbo-Egbo (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary School) won the triple jump, posting 39-7, and Yana Kruglikova (Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan/Ust-Kamenogorsk) finished runner-up with a long of 39-3.
 

 

In the throws, newcomer Sarah Harms (Hampton, Iowa/Hampton-Dumont) finished second in her heat, throwing the shot 42-9 3/4. Rachel Jansen (Orange City, Iowa/MOC-Floyd Valley) came in third place with a 45-9 1/4 distance, with Ivana Barsic (Zabresic, Croatia/16th) following in fourth (44-8), Sarah Behrens (Marathon, Iowa/Laurens-Marathon) in fifth (43-5) and Morgan Edwards (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) in sixth (42-3 1/2). Edwards also captured first place in the weight throw with a 51-1 3/4 distance.

Kayleen Popp (Haven, Kans./Haven) finished second in the pole vault, clearing 11-5 1/4. The women's 4x400 meter "A" team captured second place honors as well, clocking in at 3:52.99 in heat 2, while the "C" team finished first in its heat with a 3:59.03.
