Cedar Falls, Iowa - The Panther track and field teams hosted their first-annual Mark Messersmith Invitational today, April 9, at the Mark Messersmith Outdoor Complex.

The women's relay teams had a successful day, ending the day with a first place and two second-place finishes. In the women's 4x200 relay, Liz Bradfield (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls), Pamela Kyeremateng (Accra, Ghana/Wesley Girls' School), Lauren Carruthers (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) and Meredith Kosmacek (Persia, Iowa/Tri-Center) took top honors, finishing the race in 1:40.12. In the 4x100 meter relay, Bradfield, Carruthers and Kosmacek added Blair Runde (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) to the mix and finished second in 47.72. Bradfield, Lynnette Wilson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) Jamie Hutchinson (Charles City, Iowa/Iowa City West) and Carruthers clocked in at 3:52.58 in the 4x400 for a second place finish.

In the field events, Crystal Hanson (Roland, Iowa/Roland-Story) finished runner-up in the high jump, clearing 5-7. Morgan Edwards (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) won the hammer throw competition with a 163-1 toss, while Sarah Behrens (Marathon, Iowa/Laurens-Marathon), Ivana Barsic (Zabresic, Croatia/16th) and Sarah Harms (Hampton, Iowa/Hampton-Dumont) finished in second (46-6 1/4), third (45-1) fourth (42-6 1/4) respectively, in the shot put competition.
 

 

Cali Lyons (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) finished with a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.86 and fellow newcomer Runde captured third in the 100-meter dash (12.29). Kara Yahn (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) finished the 400-meter hurdles in second place with a 1:02.72 time and Shayla Houlihan set a personal best with her 4:50.90 time in the 1,500 meters.

The Panthers will be back in action next weekend (April 15 and 16) in Knoxville, Tenn. to compete the Sea Ray Relays.
