Illinois State Edges UNISept. 25, 2004
Normal, Ill. - Rachael Tink (Waterloo, Iowa) had 16 kills and 10 digs, and three other Panthers reached double-digits in kills, but it was not enough as Illinois State edged the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team, 3-2, Saturday night at Redbird Arena. Game scores in favor of the Redbirds were 30-20, 24-30, 28-30, 30-21 and 15-13. A crowd of 3,383 was at the match, the eighth largest volleyball crowd in Redbird Arena history. With the win, Illinois State improves to 9-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference. UNI falls to 7-5, 2-1 with their first conference loss of the 2004 season. After the two teams split the first two games, UNI took a 2-1 lead by rallying from an 18-12 deficit midway through the third game. Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) had three of her 13 kills during a run that saw UNI pull ahead, 24-22. With the game tied at 28-all, Brazda and Erin Hirsch (Waterloo, Iowa) teamed up for a block to put UNI up 29-28, and Trista Humpal (New Hampton, Iowa) sealed the game with a kill. After Illinois State posted a fourth-game win, the teams went to a decisive fifth game. After ISU opened a late lead, two straight Tink kills pulled UNI within one, 14-13, before the Redbirds' Laura Doornbos clinched the match with the last of her match-high 27 kills. Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) had 12 kills for UNI, and Shari Vermeer (Sioux Center, Iowa) added 10. Stephanie May (Dubuque, Iowa) had 19 digs defensively for the Panthers. UNI is next in action this Friday (Oct. 1), when Wichita State comes to the West Gym. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
