Terre Haute, Ind. - Ashten Stelken (Manchester, Iowa) had 12 kills and Beth Discher (Grimes, Iowa) added a career-high 10 to lead the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Indiana State tonight. Game scores were 30-18, 30-24 and 30-20.

Stelken hit .381 (12-4-21) individually, while Discher hit an even more efficient .529 (10-1-17). The redshirt freshman from Dallas Center-Grimes High School added three digs and two blocks. As a team, the Panthers hit .356 (49-12-104), while holding ISU to .128 hitting (33-19-109).

UNI never trailed in game one. Leading 8-5, the Panthers went on a 6-1 run, supped by a pair of kills from Shannon Aschoff (Ankeny, Iowa). Indiana State was never able to get closer than six points the rest of the way, as the Panthers cruised to a 30-18 win. UNI hit an impressive .630 in the first game, with zero hitting errors (17-0-27).

The second game was tight until UNI was able to pull away late. Holding a 21-20 lead, the Panthers went on a 7-2 run to take control, and eventually win 30-24. Aschoff, Discher and Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) each had kills for UNI during that run, and the Panthers also teamed up for a pair of blocks.

Leading 11-10 in game three, Discher had back-to-back kills to push the Panthers to a 15-10 advantage. The Sycamores rallied to pull within two several times, as late as 20-18, but UNI finished the match off with a 10-2 run to take a 30-20 win.

With the win, UNI is now 9-8 overall, 4-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Indiana State fell to 3-12, 0-7 in the Valley. The Panthers travel to Normal, Ill., to face Illinois State tomorrow night (Oct. 6), with first serve set for 7:00 pm. The match will be broadcast on Star 1330 (KWLO, 1330 AM), with Eric Braley calling the action.
