Panthers Sweep SalukisOct. 8, 2004
Carbondale, Ill. - Rachael Tink (Waterloo, Iowa) and Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) each had nine kills to help lead the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team to a 3-0 win at Southern Illinois tonight. Game scores were 30-27, 30-21 and 30-18. The Panthers hit .273 for the match (48-18-110) to just .101 for the Salukis (33-22-109). The win was UNI's 24th straight over Southern Illinois, and extended the Salukis' losing streak to seven matches this season, while the Panthers won their third straight match. UNI received a break late in game one. Trailing 28-27, Southern Illinois served out of order, giving UNI a 29-27 edge, and it closed out the game on the next point. UNI hit .483 (17-3-29) in the second game and held the Salukis to -.083 (5-8-36) hitting in the third game to win the final two games, 30-21 and 30-18, respectively. Stephanie May (Dubuque, Iowa) had 11 digs, and Erin Hirsch (Waterloo, Iowa) had 39 assists for the Panthers. With the win, the Panthers improve to 10-6 overall, 4-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Southern Illinois falls to 4-13, 2-4). UNI travels to face Evansville tomorrow (Oct. 9).
