Sampson Leads UNI to 3-2 win over Missouri State

Cedar Falls, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team won the final two games to claim a 3-2 win over Missouri State Friday night at the West Gym. Game scores were 22-30, 30-28, 21-30, 30-28 and 15-4 in favor of the Panthers. Freshman outside hitter Amy Sampson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), making just her second start of the season, led the way with a career-high 18 kills for UNI. Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) and Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) each had 15 kills, while Stephanie Germann (LeMars, Iowa) added 13. After winning a tight 30-28 decision in game four, the fifth game was all UNI. The Panthers jumped out to leads to 6-0 and 10-1, on their way to the 15-4 victory. UNI spread the wealth around, as Rowen, Sampson, Germann and Ashten Stelken (Manchester, Iowa) each had two kills in the game. As a team, UNI hit a whopping .556 (10-0-18) in game five, to -.048 (2-3-21) for Missouri State. Missouri State used a 6-0 run midway through game one, to take a 16-12 lead, and would not trail again. The Panthers pulled within three points as late as 20-17, but another Bears run gave MSU a 24-18 lead and they were able to eventually claim a 30-22 win. MSU hit .412 (18-4-34) in the first game. The Panthers jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead in game two, thanks mostly to an 8-0 run on the serve of Patricia Dietz (Tripoli, Iowa). The Bears responded with a 6-0 run of their own shortly thereafter, to tie the score at 15-all. UNI took a 24-21 lead and held its advantage the rest of the way, eventually holding a 29-25 edge. MSU didn't quit, scoring three straight points to pull within 29-28, before Samspon blasted a kill off the Bears block to give UNI a 30-28 win and even the match at one game apiece.
Game three was controlled by Missouri State from the outset, as the Bears jumped to early leads of 5-1 and 12-5. UNI never got closer than within six points the rest of the way, as the Bears cruised to a 30-21 win. MSU again hit well, posting a .419 (22-4-43) hitting percentage in the game. UNI was the aggressor early in game four, taking leads of 6-2, 13-6 and 16-8. MSU pulled within 17-13, but UNI again built its advantage to 25-17. The Bears made yet another push, however, rattling off five straight points late to pull within 26-25. UNI never gave up the lead, however, as Germann recorded back-to-back kills to give the Panthers a 28-25 edge. After a Sampson kill gave UNI a 29-26 lead, MSU recorded consecutive put-aways to pull within 29-28. But Germann had the game-winning kill, giving the Panthers a 30-28 win and forcing the decisive fifth game. With the victory, UNI improves to 12-7 overall, 6-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Missouri State falls to 13-7, 6-2 in the MVC. The Panthers are now in a four-way tie for second in the conference with MSU, Bradley and Illinois State. League-leading Wichita State (17-2, 8-0 MVC) comes to the West Gym tomorrow night (Oct. 15) to face UNI, with first serve set for 7:30 p.m. |
