Des Moines, Iowa - Rachael Tink (Waterloo, Iowa) had a match-high 18 kills and added a season-high 18 digs to lead the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Drake Saturday night at the Knapp Center. After dropping the opening game, UNI stormed back with three straight decisive wins to claim the 28-30, 30-18, 30-20, 30-16 victory.

Shari Vermeer (Sioux Center, Iowa) added 11 kills for the Panthers, and Stephanie May (Dubuque, Iowa) had a career-high 24 digs for the Panthers. UNI hit .284 for the match (66-20-162) while holding Drake to just .119 hitting (44-24-168).

The Bulldogs came out on fire and took game one, 30-28. UNI held a 28-27 lead, but Drake scored the final three points on a Panthers service error and back-to-back UNI hitting errors. Drake hit .333 (18-4-42) in the game, with Eve Johnson recording seven kills. Tink had four kills and four digs for UNI.

UNI responded with a convincing 30-18 win in game two. The Panthers used a 9-0 run to open an 18-9 advantage, and Drake got no closer than eight points the rest of the way. Tink and Shari Vermeer each had five kills in the second game, and UNI also had 5 team blocks in the contest.

The Panthers posted a 30-20 win in the third game, as Drake hit just .023 (8-7-44). After the Bulldogs went on a 5-1 run to pull within 21-17, the Panthers went on a 10-3 run to end the game. UNI had three blocks during that stretch. Tink led the UNI offense with six kills in the third game.

UNI opened up a quick 11-2 lead in the fourth game and never looked back. The Panthers led by as many as 15 points and hit .429 (19-4-35) in the game, with Vermeer posting 5 kills.

Drake was led by Stacy Boerema who had 14 kills, while Johnson chipped in with 13.

 

 

With the win, UNI improves to 21-8 overall, 13-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Drake falls to 3-24, 1-15 in the Valley. The Panthers next action is Tuesday (Nov. 16) when they travel to South Bend, Ind., to face Notre Dame. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. central and the match can be heard on KCNZ radio (1650/1250 AM).
