UNI Picked Second in MVC Preseason Volleyball PollAug. 21, 2008
St. Louis, Mo. - The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team has been picked to finish second in the 2008 Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll, as announced by the conference office today. Voting was done by the league’s 10 head coaches. Wichita State was tabbed to win the league, and collected four first place votes and 91 total points, while the Panthers tallied two first-place votes and 84 points. Creighton was third with three first-place votes and 81 points, while Missouri State received the final first place vote and 73 points for fourth place. Coming in fifth was Illinois State (67 points), followed by Southern Illinois (52), Evansville (34), Drake (31), Bradley (25) and Indiana State (12). Individually, UNI had a pair of players named to the preseason all-conference team, in senior middle blocker Ashten Stelken and junior outside hitter Shannon Aschoff. Stelken was a 2007 first-team All-MVC selection, while Aschoff was the 2007 State Farm MVC Tournament Most Valuable Player. UNI welcomes back four starters from last year’s Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship team that finished 22-11 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in the past 10 years. In addition to Stelken and Aschoff, other key returners for the Panthers are senior outside hitter Amy Sampson and sophomore libero Ellie Blankenship, who was named to the 2007 MVC All-Freshman Team. The Panthers open their 2008 season Aug. 29 when they travel to the Florida Atlantic Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla. 2008 Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Volleyball Poll
