Missouri State Advances to MVC Tournament FinalsNov. 25, 2005 Cedar Falls, Iowa - Erin O'Connor had 19 kills, and Missouri State recorded 20 total team blocks, as the second-seeded Bears posted a 3-1 win over third-seeded Illinois State in the semifinals of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball Championship. Game scores were 30-19, 30-28, 26-30 and 30-24. Sarah Lansing had 13 kills for MSU and Katie Werges added 12. Sabrina Apker tied a MVC tournament record with 12 block assists. Illinois State was led by outside hitter Laura Doornbos, who tied O'Connor for match high honors in kills with 19. Missouri State used an early 7-0 run to take control of the first game. The Bears turned a 9-7 advantage into a 16-7 lead, and did not allow Illinois State to get closer than seven points the rest of the way, en route to a 30-19 victory. Erin O'Connor had six kills in the first game for MSU. Illinois State held a 24-22 lead in game two, but Missouri State went on a 5-1 run to take a 27-25 lead. The Bears built their advantage to 29-26, before a MSU hitting error and a kill by Manoela DaCunha pulled the Redbirds to within 29-28. However, after a Bears timeout, Katie Kreimer put the ball away to give her team a 30-28 win and a 2-0 lead. The Redbirds broke away from a late tie in the third game to pull within 2-1. With the score tied at 22-all, ISU went on a 4-1 push to lead 26-23, and was able to side out the rest of the way to earn a 30-26 victory. Missouri State used a 7-1 run in game four to turn a 10-all tie into a 17-11 lead, and would not let Illinois State get closer than six the rest of the way. The Bears had two of their 20 team blocks during that run.
Missouri State (23-8) advances to tomorrow's championship match at 3:30 p.m., and will play the winner of the second semifinal between Wichita State and UNI. Illinois State ends its season with a record of 18-12.
